With increasing pressure from all fronts attempting to lower the quality of mental health services and reduce funding for research, it is now more important than ever before that we remain organized. We must also move the profession forward so that psychologists are able to provide the full scope of services their extensive training allows. We know that the pressures of your work as a psychologist severely limit the time you can personally devote to advocacy. The IPA exists to ensure that someone is there looking out for you so that you can devote all your energy to your own work. The IPA is the only and largest (over 1400 members) organization in the state that represents you where you need it most at the local level.

As an IPA member you have access to the Member’s only section of this Website that includes information that will help you with your practice. You are also eligible to join our listserv where you can get immediate answers to your questions from fellow listserv members. As an IPA member you can also make use of our phone consultation service with our Director of Professional Affairs as well as access to consultation from members of our Ethics Committee. If you choose to use our placement services, IPA members are also given exclusive access to job listings as soon as they come in. Finally, IPA members benefit from discounts to our annual convention and continuing education programs.

About the Program

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

The Illinois Psychological Association receives numerous inquiries and calls from consumers who wish to obtain psychological services. For example, Illinois residents calling the American Psychological Association for referrals are directed to the Illinois Psychological Association. The IPA is listed in a variety of mental health directories that also generate referrals. The IPA is currently undertaking its own public relations campaign, in tandem with the APA’s Public Education Campaign, and that too generates calls to the Consumer Information Program. The IPA website referral program is a valuable consumer resource. Consumers can search, not only by location but, by specialty area.

When a phone inquiry is received, the names of 3 IPA Members who are listed in the Consumer Information Program are given as a public information service to the caller according to the caller’s city or zip code area. No statement related to competence or specialty practice area is given. It is the professional responsibility of the psychologist to determine if he or she has the skills necessary to assist the caller or if an appropriate referral is indicated.

Application Instructions
To be listed in IPA Referral Program (PLP phone referrals and Website listing) you must be a Licensed Member of the Illinois Psychological Association. If you are not a Member but wish to join the IPA, you can become a member and get listed in the IPA Referral Search at the same time.

If you are a Licensed Member and wish to participate in the IPA referral program,

1. Complete the Website Referral Application Form

2. Mail:
(a) a copy of your Clinical Psychologist License or Certification as a School Psychologist
(b) a copy of the face sheet of your current liability insurance indicating that it is active and provides a minimum of $1/1 coverage to:

3. Pay the indicated fee if you have not already done so as part of the online registration.

If you have not joined online, you can still join the combined IPA Website Referral and Psychologist Locator Program (PLP) services. The introductory yearly fee (July 1 to June 30) is $50 for this opportunity. Clinical Practice Section Members pay $30. Payment can be made by either sending a check to:

or by leaving your credit card information (Master Card or Visa only) on our confidential voicemail (312-372-7610 x. 250). When leaving information tell us the name on the credit card, the credit card number,the expiration date and the billing address for the credit card. Also tell us how much you authorize us to charge on the card.

Group practices or business names are not permitted. It is the responsibility of psychologist subscribers to send a new copy of their insurance and license/certification if they are renewed during the year. Failure to do so will result in our name being deactivated from the Program until the information is received.

About IPA

Brief History of IPA

The Illinois Psychological Association (IPA) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit association, and the largest professional association of psychologists in Illinois, with nearly 1,200 members.

The IPA was first incorporated on August 28, 1936 as “Illinois Society of Consulting Psychologists.” In December 1944, the Articles of Incorporation were amended to change the name to “Illinois Association for Applied Psychology.” Finally, in February 1976, the Articles of Incorporation were again amended to change the name to “Illinois Psychological Association.”

Until 1963, when the IPA successfully lobbied the General Assembly to pass the first Psychologist Registration Act (HB 926), the IPA was recognized as the credentialing authority for psychologists. After the Registration Act was passed, the IPA successfully worked to include psychologists in the adult guardianship laws, civil laws to assess mental capacity, criminal laws to stand trial or enter a plea, the Dissolution of Marriage & Child Custody Act, child and elder abuse reporting, Social Security mental impairment evaluations, and evaluations of children with special education needs, among others. Psychologists’ work is protected by the Illinois Confidentiality Act and they are given specific privileges in the Illinois Mental Health Code.

The Registration Act was completely revised in 1989 and became the Clinical Psychologist Licensing Act. In 1991, it was updated to become a Practice Act. The Act was again amended in 2014 to include a section to license prescribing psychologists, only the 3rd state in the U.S. to do so.

The IPA has fought to ensure that insurance companies compensate psychologists for their services if the insurance company pays a physician for similar services by passing the Freedom of Choice Act. The IPA further fought to include psychologists in the Prompt Payment Act and the Any Willing Provider section of the Insurance Code, and continues to advocate for psychologists’ ability to perform evaluations independently under the Probate Act.

IPA Mission Statement

The purpose of the IPA shall be to advance psychology as a science and a profession and as a means of promoting human welfare by the encouragement of psychology in all its branches; by the continual improvement of the qualifications of psychologists through high standards of ethics, conduct, education and achievement; by expanding roles and opportunities for psychologists to serve the public within the field’s emerging scope of scholarship and expertise; and by the increase and dissemination of psychological knowledge through meetings, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussion, publications, electronic media, and current methods of communication.
